Ski Obergurgl
Obergurgl ResortObergurgl is a traditional old-style ski resort, in a remote setting at the end of a dead end road. With very little traffic coming through, you will find Obergurgl a relaxed ski resort with a friendly atmosphere, both during the day and at night. There is some good apres ski, but this is a resort best suited to families and to those on a romantic get-away.
The skiing and snowboarding is very good in Obergurgl and you can be sure to find very little queues on the slopes. Obergurgl is a relatively small resort, yet the lifts going out of the resort aren't very convenient which makes moving between hotel and ski lift a little difficult. There is however a very prompt shuttle to transport skiers and snowboarders to their destination.
Being one of the highest points in Austria means that Obergurgl's snow is often fantastic and the season lasts from November through until May. Due to the superb snow making equipment, the lack of queues and the relatively large amount of easy runs, Obergurgl ski resort is a superb choice for beginners and intermediates. The ski area encompasses a total of 110km (68miles) of marked pistes - with over 90% being covered by artificial snow cannons for extra snow assurance. The ski area at Obergurgl comprises of 30% beginner blue runs, 50% intermediate red runs and 20% advanced black runs.
Obergurgl is a popular resort amongst the Germans and a number of Brits return year after year for the laid back and leisurely pace of this traditional Austrian resort. Obergurgl ski resort is not ideally suited to freestyle snowboarders or skiers as there is no designated terrain park. There is a distinct lack of black runs at Obergurgl so it isn't really suited for keen and experienced skiers. Obergurgl's ski schools are generally regarded as being very good.

Where to eat in Obergurgl?
Obergurgl restaurants
Dining in Obergurgl tends to take place in many of the gourmet restaurants inside the premier hotels. Both the Edelweiss und Gurgl hotel and the Hotel Alpina have great reputations and the dining at the Hotel Alpina is also praised by many tourists.
A popular event is the Nederhutte. On Thursday nights this venue has a Dine and Dance evening with the choice of either a raclette grill or a meat fondue. Table booking is a must to secure your place... a must for those who like to have plenty of evening fun.
The Hotel Mathiesn Tel: 05256 6280 serves traditional Austian food whilst Hybertus Stuberl T: 052566594 serves a good steak. The Romantika at the Hotel Madelaine and the Belmonte are good for pizzas for those on expenses or a larger wallet head for the Hotel Hochgurgl which comes recommended.

Nightlife and Apres Ski Obergurgl
Obergurgl Bars
Obergurgl isn't know for its apres in the same way that Ischgl and St Anton are, but surprisingly offers some fun post-ski partrying for those who want it.
The Nederhutte mountain restaurant is a lively start to the night, although the post-apres descent back down to resort shouldn't be undertaken too lightly. If you do happen to sample too much of the local schnapps, you can always take the snowmobile down! The Josi Keller (05256 6205) is a popular haunt with all ages; whilst the Edelweiss and Gurgl bar attracts a mature crowd in its atmospheric bar. Later on head down to Krumpn's Stadl Bar for the live music and dancing.
As most of the nightlife is contained within the walls of the ski hotels, should you wish to venture further afield, many party animals may choose to head for the Josl Keller where they have two large bar areas and a disco - this venue is always packed out much later on in the evening.
In nearby Hochgurgl there are literally no restaurants other than those in the hotels; the night time adventure here often attracts those after dinner looking for further parties into the night - Toni's Almhutte at the Hotel Olympic and The African Bar at the Hochgurgl Hotel have come thoroughly recommended.

Alternative Winter Acitvities in Obergurgl
As well as the obligatory skiing and snowboarding on offer there are also a number of activities and other snow sports available for you to take part in. If you fancy a day off the mountains why not take a trip to the ice-rink in the centre of town? Many of the hotels have 'Wellness Centres' - they offer a number of courses to ease tired muscles and rejuvenate the body.
If you enjoy horse riding, then you could take a trip to the fantastic indoor Schreuber riding arena. This arena is the breeding centre for the Haflinger horse and will provide tuition for all levels of ability.
Alternatively if neither horse riding or ice skating appeal to you then maybe a cultural visit is required. Take a trip to the St Johannes Nepomuk Church - the highest church in Europe. If you're lucky enough to be in Obergurgl during the Christmas period, then the Midnight mass where the local all-male choir in the gallery perform memorable vocals, is definitely worth staying up for.
If none of the above appeal maybe the following activities below may tickle your fancy:

Obergurgl Ski
Obergurgl is linked to Hochgurgl by the 3.6km Top Express Gondola which means that the two resorts are considered as a single area for skiing. Obergurgl is one of the most snow sure non-glacier resorts in the whole of Europe and queues are generally short (thanks to the fantastic lift system which has been installed).
Experts - Go off piste with a guide, the descent from Hohe Mut is definitely worth doing. Lots of the blacks are really just good red runs unfortunately, but still very enjoyable.
Intermediates - Great even if lacking in a little terrain. Head to Gaisberg for some pleasantly challenging red runs that go through the trees. Also for a bit of variation head on down the valley to Solden for the day.
Beginners - Good for first-timers, plenty of opportunities to improve as the week goes by.
Snowboarders - No park sadly.

There is a lack of choice on the mountain but we at Snowbrainer liked the Nederhutte T: 05256 6425 for the vegetarian choices and great ribs for the meat eaters.
The in place in the Galsberg area is David's Skihutte T: 05256 6332 which is good value |

Recommended Ski Runs Obergurgl
As we've mentioned previously, Obergurgl and nearby Hochgurgl have a distinct lack of long black runs. However, there is a brilliant range of red and blue runs for beginners and intermediates.
If its moguls you're after, then take the route from the Festkogl to the bottom of the Gripllift. Although not quite a black run, advanced skiers should try out route 11 from the top of Hohe Mut Festkogl. If its off-piste skiing that you're after...then you'll have a varied choice of slopes both sides of the Festkgol and Hoe Mut. |

Obergurgl is an old fashioned resort and is none the worse for it and we tend to return every couple of years or so. It is not as cheap as it used to be but that is more to do with an over-valued pound in the past than steep price rises in the resort now. We chose the half board option for this reason. The lifts do occasionally shut due to the weather but who needs them when you get off piste and Obergurgl has some lovely off piste skiing if you take a local guide. People are friendly and overall as usual we had a fantastic time. Big thank you to Alex at Snowbrainer for arranging our ski hire. We had never booked online before and she made it so easy and reassuring that we went ahead and left us wondering why we hadn’t pre booked our skis before. They were waiting at the shop for us with our names on and we were in and out in no time. An excellent service. Thank you.

Obergurgl was our second time in Austria (Kitzbuhel previously) and we loved the place. Good lifts, small queues and lots of skiing available. Oh yes a little drinking as well! Will be going back next March.

Our friends ski in Obergurgl every year and we decided to join them for Christmas. Brilliant skiing and we really enjoyed the off piste with our guide. We went over to Solden on the free bus, it was fun for a day’s skiing and cost us a few extra euros on the lift pass at the beginning. The wife thinks we might book again for March, so can we have a discount code please?

Good snow, excellent skiing especially the off piste, quick transfer, ski in, ski out, what more can one want for a quick weeks ski break in Jan. Obergurgl is a definitely a resort to try especially in low season. Scheiber Sport is a first rate ski hire shop and the staff were brilliant. Would well recommend using them. Thank you for the group discount you gave us on the skis. Cheers Tom

We love skiing in obergurgl and last year stayed at the Hotel Edelweiss. Excellent ski-in ski-out and with the Snowbrainer ski hire shop there too we had the laziest ski holiday ever. I'd recommend Neidergutte for you apres ski drinks.
