France, Les Collons, Les Crosets, Les Diablerets, Les Gets, Les Houches

Les Collons, Switzerland

Description: Les Collons is at the bottom of an east facing slope down from Thyon 2000 which in itself is just a collection of appartment blocks and hotels that links into the 4 valleys (ie Verbier) Les Collons is a better place to stay than Thyon 2000 and has a number of restaurants and bars to keep you happy

Les Contamines Montjoie, France

Description: An authentic French village located between Chamonix and Megeve, and it doesn't have the prices to match it's brothers. It is a resort where a car could prove useful as much of the accommodation is along the valley and away from the main lift. One fame to claim is that it constantly seems to get above average snowfall. Les Contamines-Montjoie is an authentic village resort in Haute-Savoie. The village is attractive with lots of traditional architecture. There are a number of activities offered besides the downhill skiing. A Nordic park of 26km for cross country skiing. There is also a natural ice rink, dog sled rides and snow shoe walks.

Les Crosets, Switzerland

Description: A good base to stay in if you are looking for a quiet place with slopes on your doorstep

Les Deux Alpes, France

Description: This really is a year round resort where the Northern and Southern Alps meet. The centre of the resort is along the main drag of over a kilometre long and here you will find a number of hotels, bars and shops. Not the prettiest place but it does have everything you need for a great week's skiing. There is a free shuttle bus which cuts down on the walking. An interesting idea is that the 6 day lift pass also gives you two days in Alpe d'Huez and Serre Chevalier. Why not catch a heicopter for only £40 return to Alpe d'Huez. Resort Map Here

Les Diablerets, Switzerland

Description: A little overshadowed by its big neighbour Gstaad, it is nonetheless and attractive base for your holiday. La Diablerets is a tradional village a little spread out that links to the ski fields of Villars. A family friendly resort with special days for young skiers/boarders.

Les Gets, France

Description: Les Gets is a quaint but expanding village close to Geneva. It is a little scattered around the valley but getting around is helped by the free 'petit train'.Lovely! There is lots to do and has many fine shops and restaurants to choose from. It can be a little quiet at times but definately gets busier come the weekend. The village dates back to the 11th century and its name come from the old French word, 'jets' which was used for the traditional slopes used to bring down the timber from the upland regions. Les Gets is not all about winter sports - there is a lot of traditional architecture and regional cuisine to enjoy. Visit the church whose organ dates back to 1910 or the Museum of Mechanical Music. Your lift pass allows you to ski/board in Abondance, Avoriaz 1800, Champery, Chatel, Le Chappelle d'Abondance, Les Crossets, Morgins & Morzine.

Les Houches, France

Description: It is just 6km down from Chamonix and is part of the Mount Blanc Unlimited Pass. (You can also just buy a local ski pass) An attractive village with its own church but some of the accommodation is a walk from the lifts.(Be warned)

Les Menuires, France

Description: Les Menuires is a great place to stay for access to the 3 Valley ski fields. It is cheap as well and it's cheap for a reason, its ugly. Very ugly. But much prettier at night and in the last two years a number of the largest buildings have been knocked down to be replaced by wooden chalets. There is still a way to ,but this is a notable improvement. Generally the resort attracts a lot of French holiday makers.

Les Mosses, Switzerland

Description: A charming family resort in the heart of the Vaudois Alps close to Geneva

Les Orres, France

Description: Les Orres is situated in the Hates-Alpes department of the Southern Alps and it is a bit of a transfer from Grenoble or Lyon. However it has one of the largest ski fields in the area and has purpose built accommodation. It is a good family resort with great prices to match and with the added attraction of a pedestrianised centre.

Les Rousses, France

Description: Les Rousses is very famous for the Transjurassienne cross country ski race that passes through each year (the longest cross x race). It is probably not surprising then that one of the last cross country skis manufacturers is still based here. It is also on the border with Switzerland and across from Dole.

Les Saisies, France

Description: Les Saisies is just 25km from Albertville the host of the 1992 Olympics and lies between 2 valleys The Beaufortain and the Val D'Arly and what's more it's right next to Mt Blanc. It is occassionally referred to as the French Tyrol and is the home of Frack Picfcard the Olympic medal winner.

Leysin, Switzerland

Description: Leysin was once famous as a high altitude centre of the treatment of respiratory diseases, now a delightful laid back ski resort with an international feel. There's lots of sporting activities in winter including the largest Swiss toboganning park which is conveniently floodlit at night. There is also tubing on carved shoots which work similar to a bobsleigh run. It's a sunny resort and good for adults and children with a short transfer time from Geneva Aiport. Located in the heart of the Vaudois Alps Leysin is a wonderful place for a family winter holiday.

Livigno, Italy

Description: It is an amalgamation of three villages near the Swiss border. The buildings are small in scale mostly traditional in style. The village of Livigno has a pleasant atmosphere. The bus services throughout are free if a little overcrowded, and stop a little eraly in the evenings.

Lofer, Austria

Description: Lofer is a traditional Austrian village lying not far north from Saalbach.

Luchon Superbagneres, France

Description: Whilst you stay at Luchon you can take the gondola which is takes you to the ski field of Superbagneres, which is only 8 minutes away. The resort is located in the Pyrenees. Luchon is well known for its thermal spas and its close proximity to Spain .

Marilleva 900 & 1400, Italy

Description: Part of the Tentino ski region that includes resorts like Canazei and Campitello, Marilleva sits at 1400m. It's not the prettiest resort as it includes quite a few concrete blocks. It is however within tree line which helps it's attractiveness

Masella, Spain

Description: Second biggest resort in the Spanish Pyrenees and having a micro-climate lets you enjoy more sunshine than other resorts. It's a great resort for families and you'll find lots of Barcelonians driving up for the weekend to enjoy its pleasures

Mayrhofen, Austria

Description: A major league resort sitting in the flat bottomed Zillertal. Mayrhofen has a charming mainly pedestrianised street thronging with people after 4pm visiting bars, restaurants and shops. It is simply a world renowned resort and deservedly so. It is a civilised place to holiday wheter you are a family or firt timer. There is a free bus service in the village but it can close early around 5pm

Megeve, France

Description: A high class resort where fur coats go on show. Megeve is a traditional village which has been attracting skiers since the 1920's who come as an alternative to St Moritz. In later years it has been Courcheval that attracts the glitzy money or should that be Russian, but don't discount this resort especially if it snows . A pedestrianised partly medieval centre just adds to the attraction as do the horse drawn sleighs. In a nutshell, rustic chic but will global warming mean the end or just the end to the low lifts. Perhaps not as it is close to Mount Blanc and the lower pastural land doesn't need all that much snow to have a good cover. But who knows, Snowbrainer suggests you go before it is too late .

Meribel Centre, France

Description: As far as ski resorts go it’s got to be one of the all time British favourites. Meribel is situated in the middle of the world’s largest ski area – The Three Valleys. The links to Courchevel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens means there is enough skiing for a good couple of weeks, or a whole season if you are lucky enough to get the time off. The Chalet style, wood clad, buildings throughout the village make it one of the prettier purpose built resorts in the valley. It does have a tendency to sprawl across a wide area, but with those upmarket chalets and little if none high rise buildings it’s an easy price to pay for charm. Getting around the resort is fairly easy, there is some accommodation right on the piste, otherwise you need to catch busses around the resort which are free with a valid lift pass. The main part of the town is on the west facing slopes with a road winding up to Rond Point Des Pistes, Altitude 1600, Plateau de Morel and then further on to Altiport which is up in the wooded area. If you head further up the valley you reach Meribel-Mottaret. Building wise there is less charm than Meribel, however the access to the slopes is much better. If you are after the bars, restaurants and nightlife you are probably better off staying in Meribel.

Meribel Mottaret, France

Description: Mottaret sits above Meribel Centre and is a modern built satellite station of Meribel. It's quieter than Meribel centre so if you are looking to party either chip in and hire a taxi for a night out or look to stay closer to Meribel. Having said that there are still some great bars and lets face it, the access to Les Menuire, Val Thorens and up to Courchevel is much better from this position.

Meribel Village, France

Description: Meribel Village is a mini resort located on the road from Meribel to La Tania. There is much less to do than in Meribel but the village is very relaxing and if you are looking for peace and a pleasant setting this is perfect. Meribel in General As far as ski resorts go it’s got to be one of the all time British favourites. Meribel is situated in the middle of the world’s largest ski area – The Three Valleys. The links to Courchevel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens means there is enough skiing for a good couple of weeks, or a whole season if you are lucky enough to get the time off.
