Description: Very different to many in Austria because it is a purpose built resort. It is build in high rise chalet style very much like a French resort and is ski in, ski out. Guaranteed snow adds to the attraction but beware, there are a lot of flat spots at the bottom of the runs.

St Moritz, Switzerland
Description: An exclusive resort, beautiful mountains and set over the lake San Murezzan. Exclusive is the byword here! Hotels tend to be nothing less than 4 star and remember to pack your credit card for the shops. It's one of the most famous resorts in teh world and the only resort in Switzerland to have hosted the Winter Olympics. St Moritz is split into 2 areas. Dorf and Bad Dorf is the sophisticated town with fashionable shops whilst St Moritz Bad is located next to the frozen lake and much quieter. Superbolquere, France
Description: Bolquere is a recently made ski resort situated in the Languedoc Roussillon Region within the Pyrenees Province. Bolquere sits at 1632 m and is about 2.5m from Font-Romeu. It's other claim to fame is being the highest railway station in France so do check out the little Yellow train . The resort is south facing and Bolquere is both a ski resort and a residential village. There has been a lot of growth over the last few years and the village has spread. You can stay at the foot of the ski runs at Pyrénées 2000, or in chalets in the Superbolquère forest or in the village of Bolquère.

Description: Very British as is all of Andorra, Why? Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. And new lift systems help. The Brits love it and in particular Arinsal. It is a long narrow village undergoing redevelopment. Stay in the middle if you can. Another big plus is the friendliness of the locals

Pal, Andorra
Description: Pal is a picturesque quiet mountain village just over from its more illustrious neighbour Arinsal. By road the journey is about 5km. Do have a look at Arinsal to learn more about the resort. Ample car parking makes it a popular choice for locals at weekends but lift lines are not much of a problem.

Description: Halfway from the Meditteranean and the Atlantic lies the rugged Valle d'Aran up against the border of France. In the Eastern section of the Valley are the ski lifts. The valley has a lot of old traditional buildings and the ski resort itself is more modern but uses stone and traditional timbers. The restaurants around here are superb, wonderful Spanish food

Puy St Vincent 1800, France
Description: Puy St Vincent is situated in Les Ecrins, the largest park in France with a staggering 92000 acres. The year round resort is mostly split into two levels, 1400 and 1600m. Puy 1600 is larger than 1400 and a better location for lift access. Sadly there is a bit of a concrete block right in the middle which we find a bit ugly with shops below.Puy 1400 is the more relaxed of the four resorts and really is a sweet little hamlet. Nearby you will find other hamlets like Le Villaret, Les Pres, Les Albers and the original village Le PUy with its churches. Puy 1800 is the newer part of the resort wher you tend to find chalets built in the traditional style. When you arrive at your chosen accommodation you will be given a Guest card which give syou some good discounts on ski school, lift passes, the cinema and numerous other activities.

Saas Fee, Switzerland
Description: Saas Fee is a magical place, and often referred to as 'The Pearl of the Alps' It's car free and a kind of mini Zermatt with pretty Valasian farmhouses and buildings giving the taste of the real Switzerland. Good snow is guaranteed throughout the season with its high altitude. Try and visit in the spring sun when the 13 imposing 4000m peaks including the hightest in Switzerland (the Dom 4534m ) are looking their best. One thing about the village itself is that it is completely car free and the only way to get around is to flag down a horse drawn sleigh with carriage or there are small electric vehicles.

Description: One of the most skied resorts in Europe, La Plagne Domain offers some fantastic flattering skiing, good snowmaking facilities and owners who constantly invest in the lift system. It’s a terrific resort for families as there is lots of blue runs to learn on and there is less of an après ski scene. Description: Les Menuires is a great place to stay for access to the 3 Valley ski fields. It is cheap as well and it's cheap for a reason, its ugly. Very ugly. But much prettier at night and in the last two years a number of the largest buildings have been knocked down to be replaced by wooden chalets. There is still a way to ,but this is a notable improvement. Generally the resort attracts a lot of French holiday makers.

Avoriaz, France
Description: The town itself is designed as a ski-in ski-out resort back in the 60’s and Avoriaz is built on different levels at the edge of a cliff so it’s pretty dramatic. These different levels are connected by internal elevators. Practically all of the accommodation is ski-in ski-out which is a really big bonus. Car free you ski down to the lifts every morning. Getting around when you arrive means hiring baggage sledges for only €1. Frp, 08.00am to 7pm you can hire a sledge to transport you for €5-13 depending on journey length. After these hours you need ot hire a shuttle at aprox €8

Description: Pila is situated in the Aosta valley. There are some good slopes for skiing on which are usually pretty quiet due to the fact that most people who come here are Italians. So you could say its a good secret and you'll enjoy the uncrowded slopes. There is a gondola that links the town below but in Pila itself you will find a handful of restaurants. Description: It is an amalgamation of three villages near the Swiss border. The buildings are small in scale mostly traditional in style. The village of Livigno has a pleasant atmosphere. The bus services throughout are free if a little overcrowded, and stop a little eraly in the evenings.

La Rosiere, France
Description: La Rosiere is located past Bourg St Maurice on a road towards Petit St Bernard, the pass into Italy which is unfortunately shut at winter. It is a traditional alpine village, somewhat sleepy but nonetheless very friendly.

Description: The ski resort , Risoul 1850, was developed in the 1970's but the area itself has been populated since the bronze age. The resort is a mixture of concrete chalets covered with wood shingles and integrates well into the forest area. making it a more attractive purpose built resort than some.

Description: Cauterets is found in the French Pyrenees and is an elegant old spa town. Generally you will find prices here so much cheaper than the big French Alps resorts. Cauterets is full of beautiful hotels and wonderful restaurants. The actual ski area is Cirque du Lys which you get to from the village either by the Lys cable car (2000 skiers/hour) or by car (but you will need chains) Eventually the ski areas of Cauterets and Luz-Ardiden should link which would make a combined ski area of 100km +

Description: Is this place still called Courcheval or is it Moscow on snow? 1850 is the known as one of the No 1 resorts in France with a nightlife to match the status. Quite a dreary centre this doesn't stop the rich, famous and celebrities such as Victoria Beckham visiting on a regular basis.
